  • Gentlemen,

Gen GrimsleyOur Chapter leadership from Davidson recently sent out an appeal to alumni for assistance in gaining enough funds to cover attendance at this year’s SAE Leadership School. Some of you may have already responded, and if so many thanks. If not, I have an additional appeal to you to reconsider, but propose a slightly different take on the request.

Many of my classmates I have contacted were part of our Chapter from my pledge year through to graduation. I sent the same message to those my class initiated. Throughout those years at Davidson, the house provided a central place to eat, party and became a huge part of our time in school. One additional person, although not an SAE, also made the experience great and in many cases even possible - Dean Will Terry. He provided counsel, support, kept many of us out of trouble, and even when we came close to the edge he helped us out because he above all others knew that we would always give back more to Davidson than we took.

SAE and by extension our Chapter faces significant challenges in the future-just read the news. The current leadership is superb and with John Stringfellow as their advisor they continue to lead Patterson Court and Davidson in every respect and will meet these challenges. But, we need to help ensure they have all the tools they need to continue this leadership, and support them and their successors.

So, in the spirit of our collective years (and feel free to include others for whom I have no email address, or extend this to other classes before ’77 and after ’83), I propose that we establish the Will Terry Scholarship within the existing Chapter Education Fund. The idea is that this scholarship would provide sufficient tuition funds for 2 NC Theta members each year to attend the annual Leadership School. The Chapter Advisor, EA, and EDA will be the selection committee for choosing the attendees.

The SAE Foundation, who manages this fund (as an aside I am a Trustee on the Foundation Board) credits any donation you make to this fund toward your total lifetime donation status. I ask that you consider an initial donation immediately and some amount each year to sustain this scholarship long into the future.

You can donate on-line at the SAE Website here, or download a form here to mail your check, or by mailing a check directly to the Foundation, ATTN: Jason Andrick, SAE, 1856 Sheridan Road Evanston, Illinois 60201. Either way make sure you clearly state it’s for the scholarship fund within the NC Theta Chapter Education Fund.

I have sent a check to the Foundation in the name of the Will Terry Scholarship to the NC Theta Chapter Education Fund for $1000. Follow me and support our legacy in our house.

    Phi Alpha,

    Will Grimsley '80
